Earth Hour 2021 Urges All Australians To Switch For Nature

Earth Hour has always been for everyone. Every year, the hour of no power turns individuals, schools, businesses and communities into a millions-strong movement.

This year, Earth Hour has teamed up with Fonzarelli to bring you this year’s Earth Hour competition prize – a brand new electric scooter to help you make the switch for nature. Simply sign up to Earth Hour 2021 to go in the draw and you could be riding in style while helping the planet.

On Saturday, 27 March 2021, 8:30pm local time, Earth Hour, an Australian-grown initiative and now one of the largest global grassroots movements for the environment, will bring people together for one hour to #Switchfornature in a symbolic call for more action on climate change. That is 8:30 pm, wherever you are!

Earth Hour 2021 will encourage Australian communities, businesses and governments to make the switch to renewable energy to reduce our contribution to global emissions.

The impacts of the climate emergency were felt across the country and globe in recent years. In 2020, bushfires burnt an area bigger than Ireland, took the lives of at least 33 people and an estimated 1.25 billion native animals. Beyond the fire-stricken areas, cities were shrouded in toxic smoke, droughts devastated farms and regional towns, the Great Barrier Reef showed signs of another mass coral bleaching event, and millions of people marched in capital cities around the world for stronger climate action.

Historically, Earth Hour has focused on the climate crisis, but more recently, Earth Hour has strived to also bring the pressing issue of nature loss to the fore. The aim is to create an unstoppable movement for nature, as it did when the world came together to tackle climate change. The movement recognises the role of individuals in creating solutions to the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to drive change.

“This is an opportunity for Australians to have a voice in the climate debate and be a part of shaping the type of future we want to see. Nature is the planet’s life support system and gives us everything we need; from the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the food we eat. If managed properly and protected, nature can provide an immediate, cost-effective, scalable and durable solution to address climate change,” said Mr O’Gorman.

An estimated 5 million Australians (1 in 5) will participate on 27 March, with over 500,000 signatures anticipated to be sent to Australian politicians in the lead up to Earth Hour. Households, businesses and iconic Australian landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge will turn off their lights for one hour during the event.

Join us this Earth Hour on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm and be a part of the global movement making the #SwitchforNature
